When choosing outdoor lighting, you will often see terms such as IP65, IP66 or IP67. But what do these numbers actually mean, and which IP rating do you need for your garden?
The IP rating, also known as the Ingress Protection rating, tells you how well an electrical product is protected against solids such as dust and liquids such as water.
For outdoor lighting, this is especially important. Garden lights are exposed to rain, irrigation systems, humidity, dirt and regular cleaning throughout the year.
What does IP actually mean?
The first number refers to protection against solid particles such as dust.
The second number refers to protection against water.
For example, in IP65, the 6 means the product is dust tight and the 5 means it is protected against water jets.
This makes the IP rating an important specification when choosing outdoor LED lighting.
IP65 outdoor lighting
IP65 means that the light is completely protected against dust and protected against water jets from any direction.
This makes IP65 a very common and practical rating for outdoor wall lights, garden lights and other outdoor lighting applications.
IP65 lighting can be used in areas exposed to normal outdoor weather, including rain and garden irrigation.
For example, the Sus Sense Black 24V is rated IP65 and is designed for applications such as borders, driveways, hedges, paths and terraces. It combines a 24V system with a warm 2700K to 2850K light source. (SmartgardenXL)

IP66 outdoor lighting
IP66 provides a higher level of protection against water.
An IP66 rated product is dust tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction.
This can be useful in outdoor environments where lighting may be exposed to stronger water spray or more demanding conditions.
However, an IP66 rating does not automatically mean that a product can be submerged in water.
IP67 outdoor lighting
IP67 provides protection against dust and temporary immersion in water under defined test conditions.
This is particularly relevant when lighting is installed in locations where there is a greater possibility of water collecting around the product.
It is important to remember that IP67 does not mean a light is designed to remain permanently underwater. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications and installation instructions for the exact product.
Why is the IP rating important for garden lighting?
Outdoor lighting has to deal with much more than just darkness.
Rain
Garden lights are exposed to rain throughout the year. A suitable IP rating helps protect the electrical components from water entering the housing.
Garden sprinklers
Automatic irrigation systems can spray water directly onto outdoor lights. This is another reason why choosing lighting with an appropriate IP rating is important.
Pool areas
Lighting around a swimming pool can be exposed to significantly more moisture than lighting in other parts of the garden.
For pool areas, always check the exact installation location, electrical requirements and the manufacturer’s specifications before installing a light.
Dust, sand and dirt
Outdoor lighting can collect dust, soil and other particles over time. A high first digit in the IP rating indicates strong protection against solid particles.
Cleaning your outdoor lighting
Garden lights eventually need cleaning. Dust, pollen, insects and dirt can accumulate on the housing.
The IP rating indicates how the product is protected against water exposure, but you should still follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions.
Which IP rating should you choose?
There is no single IP rating that is right for every garden.
The right choice depends on where the light will be installed and what conditions it will be exposed to.
For many normal outdoor applications, IP65 provides a strong combination of dust protection and water protection.
For more demanding locations, a higher water protection rating may be appropriate.
The most important thing is to look at the actual specifications of the individual product rather than choosing a light based only on the IP number.

The IP rating is only one part of the decision
When choosing garden lighting, don’t look at the IP rating alone.
Also consider the voltage, light output, beam angle, colour temperature, materials, installation method and the location where the light will be installed.
A well-designed outdoor lighting system combines all of these elements to create lighting that is not only beautiful, but also practical and durable.
At SmartGardenXL, we believe outdoor lighting should do more than illuminate your garden.
It should make your outdoor space feel better, look better and be enjoyed long after the sun goes down.
